A sustainable Christmas?

Here at Heppy Designs we love Christmas, from the 1st December we only use Christmas tablecloths, Christmas pyjamas, Christmas cushions…. the list goes on and on. The house is filled with cheer, mulled wine and mince pies, the children do themed crafts and the fairy lights give us a warm fuzzy feeling, but the reality is that Christmas is not a great time for our planet. Wildlife and Countryside link say that around 114,000 tonnes of plastic packaging will be thrown away this Christmas, that is straight into landfill, not re-used and not re-cycled. There is packaging on everything, the sleeves from cards, cellophane around wrapping paper, cartons of fancy foods and that is before we have even considered the gifts.

The Bank of England states that the average UK household spends an extra £800 in December and that 68% of that is on gifts, yet Finder has claimed that over 21 million people receive at least one unwanted gift each Christmas. And worse still around 5% of those unwanted gifts will be thrown away – not regifted, sold or given to charity, just thrown into landfill.

The team at Zero Waste Week have offered practical solutions we can all use to minimise our impact on the planet this Christmas…..

  • Hunt through the charity shops and find amazing, unique things to give, recycling and supporting good causes, it´s a win-win
  • Offer an act of service, you could cut a Grandparents grass, give a home cooked meal to a parent, babysit for a friend.
  • Give a charitable gift, organisations like Give a Cow and UNICEF offer gifts that can really make a difference in people’s lives
  • Give consumables, everybody needs soaps, bath products, moisturisers, and a whole host of consumable products

Here at Heppy Designs we have created a Christmas range perfect for gifting. Our Christmas shaped shower bars are a great sustainable solution to reduce your impact on the planet this Christmas whilst your loved ones receive a consumable product that won´t go to waste.
